Why Mosaics?

Picture

"Mosaics contribute another dimension of color, texture and dynamics to any existing environment."

"Mosaics have the ability to enhance any architectural structure by telling a decorative, symbolic or educational story."

My on-going challenge is to integrate Hawaii’s multicultural traditions and themes into interactive and authentic public art.

The Process

Picture
Leah Kilpatrick Rigg
  • Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii
  • BA in History and Art History from UCLA
  • Masters in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University

It was at this time that I was introduced to the art of mosaics whilst pursuing an interest in art therapy.   My first venture into the world of mosaics began with some rejected bathroom tiles and a few broken plates.  That first “project” led to bathroom panels, kitchen back-splashes and mosaic wall-hangings.  The hobby turned into a passion which turned into a career.

Self-taught yet guided by the experienced words of Coy Long, the leading art and tile installer for the State of Hawaii, I expanded my mosaic work into producing and installing large-scale architectural mosaics, and became president of my own corporation and a licensed tile contractor.

Influences

Picture
  • I love eclectic historical styles of art and color palettes, from history and of place.

  • The majority of my commissions respond to an interest in local images – flora and fauna, historical and mythological scenes, and cultural concepts such as the “ahupua’a”.

  • I consult with representatives of the Hawaiian community to ensure that artistic interpretations are well-grounded in and sensitive to local lore and belief.

Art in Education and the Community

"Mosaic murals are excellent projects to demonstrate the culmination of learning from a particular
thematic unit."

"Making a mosaic is also an engaging and collaborative process that will strengthen community."
